Press Release: Muslim Brotherhood violates intellectual property rights for U-shahid

In a clear offensive violation for the intellectual property rights and for months of efforts and work, Muslim Brotherhood had launched a web site for elections monitoring that is using online maps technology “Ushahidi” under the name “Shahid2010” which used typical colors and design, and similar name of the original website U-Shahid www.u-shahid.com of DISC (Development & institutionalization Support Center) and EDA (Egyptian Democratic Academy).

The two organizations are very surprised of this unexpected step especially when it comes from one of the main competitors on the coming election who is supposed to work to gain creditability and trust. We emphasize that the original website U-shahid was created months ago in cooperation with its original owners to choose the domain name and to train groups of Egyptian youth all around Egypt to use it objectively and impartially to be surprised with no advance coordination that MB is launching a new website with the same design, colors and very similar name in a very confusing way.

Despite the fact that the respect of intellectual property rights has become one of the agreed ethics of dealing with the Internet and using new media technologies it seems that Muslim Brotherhood cannot see a big difference between creativity and forgery. The Brotherhoods should be honest with themselves so the others can feel their credibility especially that they raise slogans contradicting such violation.

Deception of the public by announcing that Shahid2010 is the first Egyptian site using online map technology for election monitoring as the Brothers said on their cloned website can’t change the fact that the MB is the first to steal months of hard work of group of youth who wanted the benefit of the their country not personal or narrow organizational interests. Also it does not change the fact that making such deliberate confusion is a part of the historical and usual breach of Brotherhood to the national consensus.

It is worth mentioning that we have communicated over four days since the launch of the cloned website those who are responsible for it from the Brotherhood and different organizational levels within the Brotherhood in order to rectify the situation and correct the mistake – if it was a mistake – and after a long series of promises, we recently received a clear rejection from the website manager to correct the situation. In the same time we wanted U-shahid web site to be a platform for cooperation and coordination between all the parties concerned and interested in transferring a transparent image for the extent of the fairness of the upcoming election.

It is also noteworthy that although the program is open source and everyone has the right to use it but deriving a domain name that is very similar to our already registered domain name after the launch of our original website in a way that causes confusion to the users is an immoral and irresponsible act that not taking into account any canonical principles as well as being not compatible with the slogans of the Brotherhood nor the face it tries to show.

Finally we wish to clarify that U-shahid is owned by all of the Egyptians who want to records their testimonies about the upcoming parliamentary elections through the means mentioned on the website regardless of their political affiliations, not for serving a specific political group and that it depends mainly on the regular posts by normal people that do not adopt any interest other than the public interest in fair and non- falsified elections.
